Apple iPad Air
iPad Air, the middle of the range
iPad Air is the iPad to buy when the entry model is not enough and iPad Pro is more than you need. The M4 chip gives it desktop-class performance for drawing in large files, editing video and running pro apps, it works with Apple Pencil Pro and the Magic Keyboard, and it costs less than the Pro because it uses a Liquid Retina display rather than the Pro's Ultra Retina XDR panel. For students, illustrators, note-takers and anyone replacing a laptop for travel, it is the iPad that fits.
Choosing between the two sizes
Both sizes run the same M4 chip and the same accessories, so the choice is purely about where the iPad lives. The 11-inch iPad Air fits a small bag and one hand, and it is the size to carry to lectures, meetings and flights. The 13-inch iPad Air is the one for a desk or a drawing table, where the larger canvas pays off in illustration and in two apps side by side. If you are unsure, think about how often it will be held up rather than laid flat.
Storage, cellular and earlier models
Storage runs from 128GB to 1TB. 128GB suits a student whose work lives in iCloud, 256GB suits most people, and 512GB or 1TB suits video and large illustration libraries kept on the device. Cellular models add a connection away from Wi-Fi. Earlier-generation iPad Air models appear on this page while stock lasts, with the same screen sizes and accessories.
When iPad Pro or iPad is the better buy
Choose iPad Pro with M5 if the display is the work, for colour grading, HDR video or professional illustration, or if you need Thunderbolt for fast storage. Choose iPad with A16 if the tablet is for streaming, browsing and schoolwork and the M-series chip would go unused. The full lineup, including iPad mini and the new iPad mini with A20 Pro, is on the Apple iPad page, and the Apple Pencil Pro and Magic Keyboard that fit iPad Air are on the Apple accessories page. Every iPad Air is available online and in store at JB Hi-Fi.
