WHIMM emerged from Toronto’s post-punk underground over a decade ago, with Mounir Al Shami and Andrew Matthews slowly expanding their sound into something restless and absorbing. No Promotion feels fragmented yet precise, balancing motion and decay with echoes of Coil, Vangelis, and Section 25.

Half the album was engineered by Patrick Flegel of Cindy Lee at REALISTIK Studios in Montreal, including guitar on opener Five in Decline. Early highlights include Another Labour and Returnal, while Rye, A Death Remembered, and the organ-rich After the Last Sky widen the record’s emotional reach.

Later, K’20, the title track, and After the Last Sky (Reprise) bring things toward reflection and release. Throughout, Al Shami writes from the Palestinian diaspora, tracing displacement, lucidity, and separation with lines that move from clear-eyed distance toward defiance and deeply personal alienation.
