Aged from 16-22 years old, inclusivity, gender diversity and fluidity runs through the bands. They speak up and sing loud about what is wrong in their and their audience’s worlds. And occasionally, what is right. They host all ages gigs in safe third spaces. They have inspired others to go to every show, or start playing music. They make sure no one feels alone.

DUN Records’ Natasha Griffiths says “This is the time where often young bands can end up in the wilderness years. With no money to release a record “properly” or tour outside of their home town, things stagnate. While a bonus of playing all of the time means Dunedin’s artists are next level in their musicianship, there is a real chance that after a bit more time of playing the same venues over and over, some of these musicians may just end up being, those people in the future reflecting on that nice time they were in a band when they were young. To prevent this from happening, to ensure these career artists stay on the path of continuing to create as they should, I decided to invite these bands to be part of a record release inspired by the 1980's classic Flying Nun release 'Dunedin Double', yes the one from more than forty years ago. (No one has done one since!) This is a four EP, double vinyl release, capturing this moment in time, and introducing these bands to a wider world”.

This is just part of how much is happening in Dunedin music right now and it has parallels to the 1980s counterpart - a close knit music community, where they and their friends are exceptional visual artists as well, attention to musicianship, the enthusiastic audience, and the songs.

The project is only feasible as (since only recently) in Ōtepoti there are ways to record for free. Sogg got an official week off school to record at Southlink Productions, a community studio led by esteemed engineer/producer Nick Roughan. Tane Cotton recorded Sivle Talk himself at War Possum Studios, and U-No Juno and Vagina Dry decided to do the same with him. Their peers Sam Charlesworth and Hamish Waddell are on respective mix duties.
