Teddy Pendergrass joined the Gospel Choir at a church in Philadelphia from an early age and played drums at the local pop group Cadillacs as a teenager. In 1970, Cadillacs was absorbed by Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes, and soon Teddy was in charge of lead vocals.
