Lady Gaga's fifth studio album Joanne was released on 21 October 2016. The album was named after Gaga's aunt, who died of lupus in 1974 at the age of 19.

Gaga wrote and co-produced the album with longtime collaborator RedOne as well as Mark Ronson, BloodPop and Hillary Lindsey. The album's lead single, the track "Perfect Illusion", was released on September 9, 2016. Joanne debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart with first-week sales of 201,000 copies in the United States, becoming the fourth consecutive Gaga album to debut at No. 1 in the country. It also topped the charts in Australia, Canada, Ireland, Italy and the United Kingdom.
