The album features Billie Holiday songs performed by the film's lead actress, Grammy-nominated singer Andra Day, plus original songs "Break Your Fall", "The Devil And I Got Up To Dance A Slow Dance" performed by Charlie Wilson, and "Tigress & Tweed" co-written by Andra Day and Raphael Saadiq.

The film focuses on the 1940s, a period where the government targeted Holiday in a growing effort to racialize the war on drugs, ultimately aiming to stop her from singing her controversial ballad, "Strange Fruit".
