The journey started in 2005 to chronicle the Kiwi Psychedelic music scene circa 1966-1972.
Thirteen years later the trip finally comes to an end with the release of volume 5 in the series ‘A DAY IN MY MIND’S MIND’. Volume 5 substantially differs from the previous volumes in that the bulk of these tracks (90%) are either unreleased or appear on CD for the very first time. All the different genres that come under the psychedelic banner feature e.g pop psych, heavy psych, operatic psych, toytown and sunshine pop. The operatic psych tracks feature future opera singers Gerry Sword and Robert Gennari, who performs ‘I Don’t Really Care’ which has his rich baritone voice soaring over a cacophony of sound on a song written by local psychedelic guru Bryce Petersen and arranged by jazz pianist Mike (Spike) Walker. Rob Guest a future star of stage and screen pops up as the lead singer of The Apparition on the poppy psych ‘Strange’.

Parlophone in-house producer and the man behind ‘A Teenage Opera (Grocer Jack)’, Mark Wirtz produces the Hayden Wood track ‘Make Time Stand Still’, a song written with John Rowles in 1968. The Wellington band The Latter Rain recorded an album’s worth of self-written tracks during1967-68 at the HMV studio in Wellington. Management was so impressed that they offered a recording contract to the group which they had to turn down because of work and apprenticeship obligations and going by the quality of the tracks that they left behind one can only wonder..what if. Christchurch band The Next Move who later morphed into The Chapta would have definitely been signed to a label if they had been an Auckland or Wellington band where there were more recording opportunities and are featured on 2 self written tracks on this CD.

Larry’s Rebels and The Music Convention are two groups that have featured heavily in this series and both return. The Spectres were one of the most popular bands in the Auckland scene and left behind a clutch of unreleased tracks including the featured ‘My Sun Won’t Shine Anymore’. To sum it all up ‘A DAY IN MY MIND’S MIND vol 5’ features 24 kiwi tracks that are all..a little bit different.
