Rory Gilmore. Pam Beesly. Joey Potter. The girls who felt real. The ones who weren’t written to be the loudest in the room, but somehow became the heart of the story anyway. I never quite understood why I felt so connected to them or why their storylines stayed with me long after the credits rolled.

It wasn’t until a friend at university described me as “the girl next door in red lipstick” that something clicked.

Oh! That’s why.

The girl next door is a daydreamer. She’s dependable. Approachable. She doesn’t chase glamour, or try to be the mysterious femme fatale. She’s sitting in her bedroom, romanticising her own life, wondering if today might be the day the boy finally notices her.

I’ve never felt like the main character in a dramatic, spotlight kind of way. But I have always felt like the girl watching the world from her bedroom window, writing stories about it. Overthinking. Hopelessly romantic. Imagining silly scenarios where I get the guy. Turning small moments into big feelings.

This album is exactly that.

These songs are pages from my diary - some pulled from real experiences, some born from daydreams, some written in the space between what happened and what I wished would happen. Every track holds a version of me: the hopeful one, the heartbroken one, the dramatic one, the brave one.

The Girl Next Door isn’t a costume I put on.
It’s the lens I see the world through.

And if you’ve ever felt too ordinary to be extraordinary,
if you’ve ever built entire love stories in your head,
if you’ve ever needed a red lipstick moment to feel a little braver -
then maybe you’re her too.

All my love,
Jenni xx "

<?xml:namespace prefix = "o" ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

credits

released March 27, 2026

Performed by: Jenni Smith
Written by: Jenni Smith, Soft Punchline (11)
Instruments by: Scott Seabright, Neo Aiono-Fukushima, Jenni Smith, Chris Dent (guitars, 11), Nikolai Pasichnik (violin, 3), Alaina Smith (backing vocals, 8)
Produced, mixed, and mastered by: Scott Seabright

Cover photography by: Matthias Skelton
Cover design by: Jenni Smith & Max Greer

Made with support from Key2Artists, AHUA Collective, and NZ On Air

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0566/7120/7498/files/475065-Product-0-I-639105214801854988.jpg?v=1774924746
