On its original release, One Soul Now attracted widespread praise. AllMusic.com proclaimed, “It picks up where Open left off, retaining the tougher sound highlighted by edgy guitar work and a more rhythmic pulse. Margo Timmins' vocals are hypnotically lovely as usual, merging with bluesy guitar riffs and emerging above the morass as the chorus kicks in", whilst Q Magazine dubbed the Cowboy Junkies “The hippest name in alternative circles”.
