Choosing a Windows laptop

Most of the decision comes down to what the laptop is for. Everyday study and home use sits comfortably on a Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3, an HP 15, an ASUS Vivobook or a Dell 15, usually with an Intel Core, AMD Ryzen or Snapdragon processor, 8GB or 16GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD. Work and travel push towards lighter machines with longer battery life, which is where the Copilot+ PCs and ultraportables come in. Copilot+ PCs and AI laptops

A Copilot+ PC is a Windows 11 laptop built around a neural processing unit, a chip dedicated to running AI features on the laptop itself rather than in the cloud. Microsoft Surface Laptop leads the group on Snapdragon X2 Elite and X2 Plus, in 13-inch, 13.8-inch and 15-inch sizes. HP OmniBook 3 and OmniBook 5, Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 5 and Yoga S7, and ASUS Zenbook A14 and Zenbook S16 follow on Snapdragon, Intel Core Ultra or AMD Ryzen AI processors. HP ProBook and EliteBook carry the same chips into business laptops. For the longest battery life on the page, the Snapdragon models are the place to start.

Gaming laptops

The gaming section runs from entry-level to high-end. Lenovo LOQ, HP Victus and MSI Cyborg pair Intel Core or AMD Ryzen processors with GeForce RTX 3050 and RTX 5050 graphics on 144Hz displays. ASUS TUF A16 and F16 step up to RTX 5050 and RTX 5060. At the top, HP OMEN and OMEN Max run Intel Core Ultra 9 with RTX 5070, 5070 Ti and 5080 graphics on 165Hz to 240Hz OLED panels. Creator and premium laptops

Dell XPS 13, ASUS ProArt P14 and P16, and the Zenbook Duo with its twin OLED screens cover the design and video end. Surface Laptop Ultra and HP OmniBook Ultra go further with NVIDIA RTX Spark graphics in a thin body.
